The person the book was for was also the model for the painting, and after a recent turn of events she hates me. I guess that happens. So no more of those. Faery Tale Preview

I am working on a small story/book for Anna Karina. It is called Annabelle and the Demon. It will be in about 5 different parts or so, depending on how I want to finish it. I am currently working on part 1. I have sketched the Cover page and the first page. I am gonna color them with color pencil when I have part 1 finished.

A brief synopsis:
It is about a girl named Annabelle, and she is a right snot. She wishes to be somewhere else, and so this demon named Juxaler comes and makes a deal with her. She has to make it to the top of wooden castle with a locket called the "Orchid of Destiny". If she makes it she can be a princess, but if she fails then the demon gets to eat her soul.

So those will be getting inked and colored as soon as I finish the other pages. I am glad I took a book binding class in college. It should look awesome, and I have always wanted to make a book of my own faery tale.

I should start prelim drawings and color test for the Klimt recreation as soon as the model sends me the picture. It should look awesome when I am finished. I have been listening to Wagner's Das Rheingold and I must say it is very good drawing and painting music.

I haven't been able to draw anything for two weeks. My brain just hasn't wanted to create stuff. I mean I have had ideas, but just no desire to complete them. Yesterday I had a desire, but I had one little problem. I didn't have the model I needed for my idea. So I asked River, and she said yes in exchange for a painting at a later date. So here are some prelim sketches for it.

The painting is gonna be 10 x 10. It is based on a line from a Blood Brothers' song, "And Love bit you in the throat". It always reminds me of singing ships for some reason so one is gonna be sinking in the background. That sketch of it is very rough. Here is the part of the song that the line is from:

I also played around with something for a possible later painting. It doesn't look like I wanted it too, but I can fix that. I just need to practice a bit more.

For my big painting I am waiting on the model to take the pictures, and then I will start with that. I am really excited for that one, because the idea and the model are both really good. Wait til you see it.

Watercolor:

The first one was me playing around with the watercolor. She is very fleshy and Rubeneste. I like her a lot. My watercolors are basically me drawing with water. Everything is very sketchy and multi-directional.

The second one I was playing around with color and the medium. It reminds me of Matisse, but again. I was just playing around. I have no real desire to do anything with watercolor ever, except play around. It seems kind of funny to me that my favorite artist used the two things I like to use the least the most. Ohh Egon, you saucy man, you.

Then I just sketched a little bit in preparation for the sketches for my next painting.

Virgin Mary Painting - Virgin Mary is impregnated by God through a ray of light. The corpses around her can symbolize a lot of things including the fact that the Union has cause countless deaths over the centuries. The printing press wheels and gears are to recommend that the whole thing is a well oiled machine. I am pretty happy with the way the rocks turned out.

The next piece is based on the Terrordactyls' song "Facelift". I did it in a traditional portrait style with a solid background. The body is shifted to the left side of the wood, because I wanted to put her there. There is heavy amounts of impasto in her skin and hair. This is the first painting that I have done start to finish in one day.

That being said my next painting is going to be the largest one I have ever done. It is also gonna be the first painting that I am doing for myself to keep (I have never kept any of my own paintings.) I am excited about it, and you will probably see tons of prelim sketches and studies here.

Notes on the Facelift painting

There are three people I have trouble getting anywhere near close to drawing their face right. The hardest is the one person I need to know how to draw for the painting I wanna do for my favorite South Carolina girl for here birthday. It is a ways away, but I will not paint it I don't have her face near perfect. I have been drawing her every day for three months. Today's will be the only ones you guys will see, because the other ones are awful. These aren't too much better. Her eyes play games with my head.

Here are three of the five drawings I am doing for my friends in SC with songs that remind me of them, or have some special relation to the person. I am doing Mario and Work Jill's tomorrow night I have to find the songs for them.

We will start with Jenifer's. She is the person who keeps me sane, and is always there for me when I fuck up. She always believes in me and no matter how much I decay and fall apart. She is my murmer in the middle of the ruins of my life. She helped me get on my feet after the Jessy fiasco, and my current bad life mistake. Her drawing is to the song "Interview at the Ruins" by Circle Takes the Square. It is color pencil and xylene markers.

Lyrics -
Hide the petals underneath that bedroom floorboard and they will wither without fail or success. Put the people in the hollow box they crafted, bolt the doors and watch them perish. Its a cautious descent, so polite and pensive at first. But the only truth is change, have patience (every hundredth year, a single breath and then its over...) Even if only for a minute for a minute its over. Even if only for a minute. So brave in the face of all those roots that ruin, to stand so tall when in fact in ruins. Next up is Wesley. I chose this song, because he always listens to complain about how I am gonna die if I don't get out of this shitty state. He also helps take my minds off of my problems and does things that are outlandish like wheatpaste, and sing songs about anarchy with me. I don't know where I would be without Wesley, and his positive attitude. The Song is "We Laugh at Danger, and Break All the Rules" by Against Me! It is pen, pencil, and crayon. This is the first coloring I have done since I gave Jessy the painting I did of Riley.

it was a birthday gift from a mexican telecaster that from this day on i will play along to all my young pioneers records. and there will be a poetry spoken silently between me and the stereo. i'll work mornings and you can work through the night. mary (as in "the virgin"), there is not hope for us. if this gm van don't make it across the state line we might as well lay down and die. because if florida takes us, we're taking everyone down with us. where we're coming from (yeah) will be the death us. and i cannot help but hold on to a handful of times when what was spoken was a revolution in itself, and what we were doing was the only thing that mattered. and how good it felt to kill the memory of nights spent holding your shirt for the smell. i heard you used to cry when you made love to him, but this band will play on. because all we can do is what we've always done. and on and on...

Finally we have Jillian Summer's. This one is the simpliest of the three, but was the hardest to draw. The reason I chose the song was because it basically describes my inability to tell someone how I feel, and before I can do so I usually fuck up. It happens everytime, and so I basically write off every girl before they have a real chance. I tried not to do it with her, but I failed again. So she gets the song "Pretty Girls" by Against Me! I wish I could tell her how much she means to me, but I already fucked that up, and can only draw old dilapidated phones. That is why I fail at human relationships I guess. I just can't connect. This one is also my favorite. None of my friends here read this, so sorry you guys get the sob story. Pencil and Ink.

This week I started the "Machina" painting. Here is the Canvas all gridded up, and then the prelim sketch of Machina all connected. I suck at drawing tables.

Machina in all her glory. I am gonna start with her hair, and then start the skin work. I am then gonna add the background. I have never done a none solid background for a paintings, so I am nervous/excited about working on it. My goal is to have the whole painting done before Thanksgiving, preferably a week or two before.

I have/am currently obsessed with birdskulls. Johnny Whitney's band Jaguar Love has a song called Antoine and Birdskull that is fantastic. So I have been drawing birdskulls in the hopes that I will create a short book based on the song, but like many thing it prolly won't be done, but here are some birdskull sketches I did. If I was gonna do a book, Birdskull would be a girl with a birdskull on her head.

Here is the first one I did. It is in my moleskin with the lyrics to the song all sprawled around it.

The second one I was gonna watercolor but couldn't find my watercolors so it got the pencil treatment. I will use it when I want to fully realize Birdskull, or for a Christmas gift cause I am thrifty like that.

So I decided that I would just post my sketches and works that I finish once a week, instead of waiting til a work is done. That way you can see my thinking process and my actual artistic process if you so desire.

Most of these sketches are from a new painting I am in the process of working on for my friend's christmas/birthday/everything present. It is a two series painting the one I am working on now is called Machina, and the one that follows will be called Fauna. They basically are gonna deal with the ideas of fertility and sterility as seen by the ideas of nature vs human conquest of the environment through machines.

As you can see there is a lot of discussion about color and shades and shit. I am excited to actually get to work on the piece this week.

This new painting is for my boss. It is a girl laying on a bed, with cupcakes floating in the air. The story behind the painting is when i was goin out with this girl I called her Cupcake, and one night when we were sleeping I had this dream. In the dream I was stabbing like 14 different Cupcakes, and instead of bleeding blood she bled cupcake filling. Then I woke up and all I saw was cupackes floating in the air with cherries intermittently between them. Then I woke up again. So I finally decided to turn it into a painting. I couldn't paint it obviously when I went out with her cause that would be weird, and not quite right on my part since I always give the girlfriend first dibs on any painting I complete. So that is over and we don't talk so I could finally make this fantastic painting. I obviously switched myself with a girl because I hate drawing myself. The girl is another God's Girl named Harlequin, if you haven't checked out God's Girls and you are an artist that uses girl models do so, because it is a fantastic reference. Okay enough with the talking. My next two paintings are for Courtcourt and Thomas, and are actually a series of Agyness Deyn portraits. Those will be posted next time we speak! Quick side story: In Dali's novel the "Secret life of Salvadore Dali" he told a story of a time he and Gala were standing on a cliff and how he wanted to throw her off. When he told her this she said "Go ahead and do it" I wonder if me wanting to kill a lover is just as crazy as that, but Dali was a known liar.

Here is the new painting. It is a very very late birthday gift for someone who I have made four birthday gifts for that I was unhappy with. The painting is based on a song by the blood brothers called "Jennifer"
~her heart throbs....her heart throbs three hundred and 40 beats per minute..those slit throat confessions...licked by my flames..of persuasion.. the shaving of bone......the lingering taste of enamel..the negatives...jennifer...such uncompromising positions..the negatives..jennifer...such uncomprimising...I said " you dont need a doctor ..honey you needa mortician because I dont want your money and I dont want your favors..this aint no blackmail this is for amusement" I said "you dont need a doctor you need a mortician" dont shady pasts make for interesting broadcasts? and human error is never an acceptible answer you dont need anyone to mourn for,...jennifer~

So basically it is about a girl who is caught doing something and someone is getting amusement
out of torturing her. The model is a God's Girl named Aoki, and the poloroids are either old or taken at Wal-Mart the other night.
Here's the song if you have never heard it before (this song was when they were a hardcore band and not the softer dancier blood brothers everyone knows).

I completed a few drawings today. Just a bit of practice stuff but still fun. They are people I know with out their faces doing something they love. I hope they know who they are. Jaguar Love's cd has leaked apparently which is awesome but I think I may wait til I get my copy. Coming up by Thursday, new orchid shirt - it has a girl named Anais looking like a paint by numbers since I couldn't find a good picture of Anais Nin, it was gonna be a reference to the song Anais Nin by Numbers, and maybe a finished anchor painting. I had to regesso the canvas because I hated the argyle a lot. Here are some images.

So I am working on a new painting as most people know, and I just wanted to show some photos of the progress. It is about 1/3 complete, but progress is going a lot faster than usual. I should stick to drawing because it takes me forever to paint things.When this work is finished, i am gonna work on two more paintings. One is for my little brother, Charles, and the other is for my esteemed colleague, Katie. Charles' painting is going to based after a Saves the Day song called "Bones". It will feature a buried head, a wolf, and some hopefully cool dream effects. Katie's painting is going to be a bright yellow anchor on a green and red argyle pattern. So no one entered my contest so no one got to win the drawing i did for it. So here it is.

In other news I messed up my Jenny Lewis painting real bad so I had to throw it out. Luckily it told me i need to practice on skin tones so that is what my next few projects are gonna be. Also I am making some paintings for friends: A pin up for Taradactyl and a painting based on a song called "Bones" by Saves the Day for Charles. So keep and eye out for those. Also I will be making a new linocut which should be "baller".

My last portrait of Galuchka did not turn out very well [See the Gala Portrait Poster], and seeing as how she is my favorite person ever I decided to make a drawing that did her justice. It is marker and white charcoal on found paper (garbage). I like it, because of the simplistic lines and the over all color works very well.

It has been a while, but I have had artist's block as well as trips to Florida and Galucheska visiting me so I haven't really had time to post anything new. I finally finished a piece though. It is called "Conflicted Alice". She is the accompaniment piece to the piece "Amputee Wonderland". The model is my best friend, because I can draw her better than I can most people. I also have a million reference pictures to work from too. The black lines are suppose to represent chaos and turmoil
, and also they help break up the pink. The only thing I am really dissatisfied with/learned from is the fact that A) wood is hard to erase off of, and B) Grids are great, but erase them before you start to paint. They aren't noticeable from far away but up close I can see them clear as day.

Today's poster is a portrait of a friend in the mode of Alphonse Mucha. His muse was Sarah Bernhardt a very famous Belle Epoque actress. His posters were in a style he developed called Art Nouveau and it is quite the decorative style. I enjoyed doing this poster, but it took me a long time, and I am kind of upset with how the yellow of the sun came out. All in all though, it is a success.

Amputee Wonderland
Here is a painting I did for my friend Kristen on wood. It is a bunch of bodies all thrown together missing heads and various other limbs. It is one of two wood paintings I am doing for her. The other one is of an amputated Alice for my amputee wonderland. She will love it. I love how the woodgrain looks as skin against the horrendously bright pink of the background. This was all planned but I didn't expect it to work so well.

Portrait project!

I started my portrait project. I am doing a series of posters called "Other People's Muses". In the series I am putting my own muses in the style or backgrounds of artist. The first poster is of my best friend. She represents Dali's muse Gala. This is because she is my Galuchka. She is the one person who can influence my art no matter what and she is really the most awesome person I know. I fucked up on her mouth but it kind of goes with the theme. This weeks poster is called Guillotine. It is pretty massive compared to Alice, Otis, and Leyla. It measures in at about 4 feet and 7 inches tall. My friend Jenifer helped me post this one cause it was so large. The wheatpaste was kind of weak this time, but it finally stuck. We pasted it on a very busy street, which was nerve wrecking at first, but became kind of cathartic after we had started.

This piece is about the idea that if one has been denied their natural rights that they have the responsibility to remove who ever is in charge of that government. This idea is one that has not been explored at all since it was originally announced in 1776, and during the time of the civil war. Our current president has usurped the power of his office, and has taken away the rights of hundreds of U.S. citizens. Whether it is through the spying laws of the Patriot Acts, or the very obvious rigging of an election where millions of minority vote were not even counted, this presidency is a shame of what our forefathers wanted for this country. It continues to head towards shit.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Depotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Here is what Alice looks like after an amazing amounts of storming. If you look at it you can still see a little bit of her color.

The next post may take awhile as I am working on my portrait poster series. I will post the posters when they are finished but they will not be posted on the street for a while, because I want to finish all seven.

Also, I am working on a set of four or five posters that will be for sell. They will be either 12x12 or 11x14, and will be my versions of another artists' work. Drawing with friends is sometimes more fun than playing with yourself

Work was slow today, so I decided to play my favorite art game with a co-worker. It is called Exquisite Corpse, and it is a drawing game. The rules are pretty simple. You fold a piece of paper into four sections, and then each person draws on one section but cannot look at any of the other sections. Since only two of us played we each did two sections. I did 1 and 3 and she did 2 and 4. Check em out.

I think this is pretty self explanatory with the quote and all, but just in case. I chose Alice because in my mind she represents what men and a male dominated society wants to be. The image is juxtaposed beside the words which have a very strong meaning about sexual oppression. I think the two work well together. I hope it rains soon, because I want the marker to run. I still haven't posted Otis yet, because the parking garage I was at tonight had cameras so next time I will go to the other one and see.

In Art news. I am goin to have an art contest starting today. The prize is yet to be determined but will probably be an original piece or a gift certificate. The theme is "Angels and Amputees". Long Diatribe about nothing

So today I went spot hunting and found some sweet spots to put up some wheat paste and other stuff. I am currently searching for a spot to put up my nine portrait posters, but if a spot for all nine can't be found I will post them in threes. Here is one of the spots.

For the other part of this post I want to talk about aesthetic, or what I find beautiful or intriguing. It always amazes me the differing view points on art and beauty. I find Jackson Pollock's drip painting amazingly beautiful, and yet someone else thinks they are utter shit. So who is to say what is art and what isn't? I mean maybe people have legitimate claims that their children's artworks should be hung beside Van Gogh and Derain. Recently I have been thinking (I have been a tad bit depressed lately, but that isn't really anything new) , that what if this view of art and aesthetic goes beyond just art. Take for example, I like really quirky, and often times, pretentious paintings. My favorites are the artist that are crazy as a loon, and usually declare themselves geniuses or get arrested for drawing things they shouldn't. This like of quirky and pretentious things also happens to go out to the women I like, which I really did just discover. I typically like shorter haired, smart, artsy, I'm-better-than-thou girls. It just amazes me how well they fit into what I find beautiful. It isn't just me though, I don't think. I always find it weird that these girls never like me, but the quiet shy type usually do, and in this paradox I have come to realize that you can't create a perfect life based on just your aesthetic and preferences, but you have to develop it with the hep of people around you. I will now tell you a story about Dali to illustrate this point. Dali was asked to paint a perfect replica of Vermeer's Lace Maker, which he gladly went to work on, and when it was finished it was almost a perfect copy. Dali considered it a failure, because the colors were not correct due to the fact that the Vermeer had aged over hundreds of years and the varnish had cause the colors to change ever so slightly. Though the copy was perfect, the artist saw it as a failure, and thus sometimes perfection isn't alway beautiful. It is the faults that add true beauty to something. Pollock's paintings might not be perfect renditions of landscapes or anything, but in the complex simplicity of the idea and the work this fault is turned into a major achievement of the work. I don't really know if any of that makes sense but since you came to see some art here are some sketches (these were taken with a camera not scanned sorry if they are bad quality).

Okay, so here is my first post. I am gonna show you guys the wheatpaste I did with Sydney Vicious's help, and show you the new one I am working on. I am also gonna tell you guys about my ideas for some new posters I have and hope you can help be come to a consensus on which project I should embark on.

First: Leyla - Wheatpaste - Week 1

I decided that I want to try to do a wheatpaste or stencil a week, and post it around town somewhere. I am currently working on my Tegan and Sara multilayer stencil project (more details on that later), so I decided wheat pastes would be a lot easier for now.
This wheat paste is called Leyla. I modeled her body off of a God's Girl by the same name, and I think she is pretty fantastic. We (Me and Sydney Vicious) posted it on a metal box before you get onto a major highway. I chose this spot, because I get to see her everyday as I drive by.

Originally she was all kinds of bright pinks and purples, which I chose because it matched the whimsical motif of the image, but it happened to rain before the wheat paste dried having an amazing effect on the cheap washable markers I used (Hey, I am not gonna use my prismacolors on something that large). That is what gave her that amazing splashy grungy look.

As you can see she is quite "hardcore".

What the fuck does it mean? Well, unlike most people I will tell you straight up what I was thinking when I create a piece, that is if it is something I can explain. With this piece I was basically trying to exorcise some demons that I have about leaving ideas unexplored. If you are a creative individual like myself, you will know what I am talking about here. I always have great ideas, but I never write them down or follow up on them. This just kind of makes me sad at the sheer number of awesome ideas that i have missed out on or haven't followed through with (ala Paper Paris, Zazie's stop animation film), and it makes me regret having not accomplished those ideas. So I pasted this on my drive so I will always be reminded to follow up with my ideas and not let them continue to pass me by or sit on them like an egg waiting to hatch.

Yes, there is a reason that she has no face, and that reason is because I wanted anyone to be able to associate with her. That is also why I left her skin the color of the paper. She has no face, no race, and really no identifiable sex (I mean unless you count those heels). I am not trying to be pretentious or have a superiority complex, but sometimes I feel street art caters to one particular sub-culture or race. Thus I want to make things that anyone can relate too. Whether it be my creatures or my portraits I want people to be able to see them as people and not by the color of their skin or their gender.

I miss Leyla.

Preview of Week 2 - Wheat paste - Otis

Otis is a creature I created last night. He is a blob of sorts created from cigarette smoke. I like him. I decided to show him to you before I post him because you can see his coloration. When I make my next post there is no telling what he will look like after the weather and other conditions have had at him. I will give you all the meanings and stuff for him in my next post.

Ideas for the future:
Okay so I want to do a series of posters. I have two ideas (I will eventually do both but I need to pick one to start with):
(a) My first idea is I want to do portrait posters of nine different girls (16 x 20), and all of them would have some how inspired me. The pros of this project are is that I get to work on my portraiture of my already favorite subjects. The cons are I don't really know if they want their portraits pasted all over my town, but three of them are famous so I don't think they would mind.

(b)My second idea is to do a bunch of self portraits. The pros of this are that i get to work on drawing the thing I am worst at drawing. The cons are that I am posting pictures of myself on the walls of my town. I think this is a bad idea but it has such potential as does the other one.

So give me some feed back. I will decide next week, which one I want to do. That is all for today. More posts when Tegan and Sara are done, or Otis goes up. My next two wheat paste posters are: (1) a girl with a tulip growing from her head and (2) a poster based on the lyrics "You say I am overdramatic, but you are the one with the scars up and down your arm" (Ten points to the person who knows the band.)
